UDMR's Kelemen: In 21st century still fighting for right to preserve and defend our identity

Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Saturday in Turda that 2018 will be a difficult year, remarking also that in the 21st century the Hungarian minority is still fighting to preserve and defend its identity.

Our future depends on the way we perceive the past. 2018 is and will be a difficult year. Whereas in 1568 it has been possible to find a solution to a fundamental question - the religious freedom, will we be able to find a solution, this year or in the near future, to meet the needs of the national minority that demands freedom of religion, of faith, of identity? Will we be able to understand why these demands are being expressed? In the 21st century we are fighting for our right to preserve and defend our identity and hence - with this freedom to decide - we hope we will not fly next to our flags, as we were promised the other day, Kelemen Hunor said - referencing a much challenged recent statement by Premier Mihai Tudose - as he attended the religious events organized by the Unitarian Church in celebration of the 450th anniversary of the proclamation of the Edict of Religious Freedom adopted at Turda on January 28, 1568.

Among the participants in the event were Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Laszlo Kover, Hungary's Minister of Human Resources Zoltan Balog, chairman of the Hungarian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Zsolt Nemeth, Secretary of State for Religious Affairs Victor Opaschi, and bishops of the historic Churches of Transylvania.
